I’m Matt Quirk, and Noko Studio is my design practice. When you work with Noko, you work with me, from the first call to the day we launch.

Where I’ve come from

I studied Fine Art at Cheltenham School of Art in England. A chance start designing for record labels and club nights in the 90s led to boutique agencies, larger firms and the BBC.

A year-long cycle tour brought me to Aotearoa, and in 2004 I moved here for good. I’ve been in Wānaka ever since.

For more than a decade I also ran Good Rotations, a community bike shop, alongside the studio. It taught me what my clients go through: paying for the branding, writing the product descriptions late at night, and wondering whether the website is actually working.

How I work

Every project has a fixed fee, a clear scope and a timeline agreed up front, so you know what you’ll get, when, and what it costs before any work starts.

Early on I explore widely. Then I bring you one or two strong directions, and we refine the best one together until it’s right. If I spot something outside the brief that you should be thinking about, I’ll tell you.

I’m a senior designer who has worked across brand, digital, print and packaging, so I can see the whole picture. That usually takes a bigger team to cover.
